How to choose a cordless electric chainsaw

Start by defining the work you need to complete. For cutting logs or preparing firewood, compare portable chainsaws whose listed uses match these tasks. This family includes guide bars from 25 to 40 cm, depending on the model. Some products are presented for domestic projects, DIY or cutting work in the garden. One 60V model can also be used for felling, cutting and pruning around the home and garden.

Guide bar length is a useful reference when comparing machine sizes. However, it does not automatically indicate the maximum diameter of a branch or log. Consider it alongside the tool type, battery platform and listed uses for your chosen product.

Chainsaw, mini chainsaw or pole saw?

For pruning small branches, the collection includes 24V mini chainsaws fitted with a 10 cm guide bar. A pole saw is better suited to working on higher branches thanks to its extended shaft.

Reach varies by product: some models reach up to 3 m, the 24V Gen. II sets up to 314 cm and the GD60PS up to 4 m. The 2-in-1 sets combine a pole saw with a hedge trimmer. Their hedge-trimmer blades measure 51 cm, while the settings and cutting capacities vary between sets. Compare the reach, both attachments and the individual features of each model.

Choosing the battery platform

The collection includes the 24V, 40V, 60V, 48V DVT and POWERALL 48V (24V x 2) platforms. If you already own Greenworks batteries, first identify their platform and choose a compatible tool. Batteries from different platforms are not interchangeable.

POWERALL 48V (24V x 2) uses a specific configuration here: the GD24X2CS36 chainsaw runs on two Greenworks 24V batteries simultaneously and does not work with a 48V battery. The 48V DVT belongs to a separate platform. Although both names include 48V, always choose the batteries specified for the chainsaw or pole saw concerned.

Comparing guide bar lengths and adjustments

The guide bar lengths found in the collection are 10, 20, 25, 25.4, 30, 35, 36 and 40 cm. The 10 cm guide bar is fitted to the mini chainsaws, while the 51 cm measurement refers to the hedge-trimmer blades supplied with combination sets. When comparing products, distinguish between the chainsaw guide bar and the hedge-trimmer blade.

Other features can help you compare models. Some use a brushless motor, while others have a brushed motor. Depending on the product, you may also find automatic chain lubrication or tool-free chain-tension adjustment. The 25 cm 48V DVT chainsaw, however, requires a tool to adjust the chain.

Choosing a tool-only option or battery kit

A tool-only version is suitable if you already own the compatible batteries required to operate the tool. Kits may include one or two batteries and a charger. Depending on the product, options include one 2Ah or 4Ah battery, two 2Ah batteries or two 4Ah batteries.

Some sets also include an extension shaft and shoulder strap. The 24V Gen. II mini chainsaw kit contains a 2Ah USB-C battery, a 30W USB-C charger and a cable.
